The motivation to have a desk-less classroom started my first year of teaching. After too many "He has my pencil!" or "She's touching my desk!", I said screw it. Then on, I have have given my kiddos a choice of where to be in the classroom. Few chose their desk, most chose to spread eagle on the floor with a clipboard. Being in a primary grade, we spend most of our day on the whole group rug and in pairs for workstations. So, it's not much different than what I've been doing for years, but with much more free room to work with!
I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it's going to work out and look in my classroom, but I have lots of ideas in mind. First step, get desks out and couches, dorm chairs, bean bags, and pillows in!
